11Financial Management of Four Hellenic Public Health Units. Analysis and Evaluation through Numerical Indicators
The Covid-19 outbreak spread in 2020 to become the most severe pandemic in the last 100 years. The public health crisis has led to a major economic crisis, which will have serious consequences on individual and societal well-being, both now and in the future. Covid-19 has exposed latent healthcare system fragilities that existed before the outbreak. This chapter studies the financial results, operating costs and the production of services of four public hospitals, which are General Hospital of “Rhodes”, General Hospital of “Chios”, General Hospital of “Syros” and General Hospital of “Kythira”. They all belong to island areas of Greece and are under the administrative control of the 2nd Regional Health Authority of Piraeus & North Aegean. The study covers the period of 2017–2020 and is carried out using financial ratios and the financial data of hospital financial statements. The main sources of data were hospital financial reports issued in the program “Diavgeia” on the above periodic basis, General Hospitals’ websites, as well as Greek and foreign bibliography – articles. The purpose of the study is to interpret the skills of hospitals, during the period of adjustment from the crisis, to maintain necessary liquidity, generate profits and also the efficient use of human and material resources.
