The description of the DSDL given here is based on the 1981 Codasyl report on a
Draft Specification of a Data Storage Description Language. The following extract
from this report defines the terms used in the DSDL:
‘A storage area is a named subdivision of the storage space allocated to a database. It
is a container for storage records and indexes.
A page is an individually numbered subdivision of a storage area, each storage area
consisting of an integral number of pages of the same capacity. Successive access to
