I first read this book in draft form in the mid-1970s, and I enjoyed it immensely. Bill was a good friend of mine; we had many interests in common, including not least a deep and abiding love of the desert. Although we didn't always see eye to eye technically, our debates on technical issues were never acrimonious, and often enlightening to me. Of course, the world has moved on since then; I've learned a lot myself in the intervening years, and I'm quite sure there are aspects of Bill's book that I would disagree with now more than I did then!
