Chapter 13. Cloud Breaches

Yahoo became the reigning data breach poster child in 2016, when the company grossly mishandled a massive breach of customer passwords. Rumors of a breach began circulating in July 2016, when Motherboard magazine reported that “[a] notorious cybercriminal is advertising 200 million of alleged Yahoo user credentials on the dark web.” Yahoo acknowledged that it was “aware” of the rumor, but would neither confirm nor deny that the stolen data was legitimate.1
