First, I need to thank Bell Labs and AT&T. Although AT&T bashing has been great sport for some time, people should recall that AT&T changed the world, a claim few companies can make. One of the best things it did was set up Bell Labs, its fabled research and development arm. I’ll spare readers the long story, but suffice it to say that, for me, one fortuitous event led to another and I led a lab focused on data quality a full dozen years before most others even began to understand the importance of the issue. Indeed, all of AT&T was our lab, as we cantered back and forth working on specific AT&T problems and the underlying principles and methods.
