As with all areas of the governance of data, distribution of data – or distribution of the information derived from it – must consider the three aspects of governance:

  • the inherent value of the data: to whom it has value, and why;
  • the risks associated with its distribution;
  • the constraints that may restrict its distribution.

Although the chapter heading – and indeed the title of this section of the ISO/IEC 38505-1:2017 standard – is about distribution, it is worthwhile noting that the term is only relevant from the perspective of the distributing organisation.
