“The Act” in this book refers to the Freedom of Information Act, unless the context requires otherwise.

Data controller: the organisation (or, occasionally, individual) responsible for how and why personal data is used, and for ensuring that it is treated responsibly and in compliance with the law.

Data processor: an organisation (or, occasionally, individual) to whom data processing has been outsourced, under contract from a data controller.

Data Protection Act: the Data Protection Act 1998 (c. 29) – applicable throughout the UK.

Data protection principles: the eight principles in the Data Protection Act which set out the standards that all data controllers must comply with.
