Along with the explosive growth in the use of databases, particularly relational databases, the need to store more complex data types has increased sharply. This is especially true for databases that support web sites that render images and formatted documents as well as sound and video clips. Furthermore, as the use of object-oriented programming languages such as C++ and Java has grown, so has the need to store the objects that these languages manipulate. (Objects were briefly introduced in Chapter 1.) In this chapter, we’ll look at a number of ways to integrate such content into databases.
