The purpose of this appendix is to cover the first steps for:

  • Creating a database
  • Creating a table
  • Sorting a column of data in a table
  • Creating relationships between tables
  • Creating a query
  • Creating forms and reports
  • Using external data

Two database packages will be used to demonstrate these operations: MS Access 2013 and LibreOffice 5 Base. Both packages are very straightforward for beginners, as almost no knowledge of programming is required. This is not the case for all databases: for example, MySQL is a popular database package but requires a solid understanding of the SQL programming language, which is not covered here.
