Camera bodies come and go; lenses are forever.

Well, to a certain extent. Most digital photographers upgrade to new camera bodies every four to five years (or so) to take advantage of improvements like more resolution and built-in HDR or Wi-Fi. That was not the case in the film era, when incremental improvements were rather small and a particular camera body could easily compete with vendors’ most recent offerings for eight or ten years, or much longer. Indeed, even classic cameras like certain Leica or Nikon 35mm models were much more than collectibles: photographers frequently prized particular models for daily shooting for decades.
