The chapters in part I show how Ken Olsen’s vision created both a technology and a certain kind of management structure and process based on strongly held personal beliefs, values, and principles. For purposes of exposition we present the several sides of Olsen’s vision in separate chapters, knowing, of course, that these are highly interrelated. On the technical side Olsen had strong beliefs and values regarding science and electrical engineering, which will be examined in chapter 3.
