A metathought is an overarching big idea that has the potential to influence business practice across decision domains or across firms or potentially both. It may not necessarily be a completely new or untested idea but it is popularized by a champion at a point in time and catches the fancy of many. For example, a metathought could be that one should create new and uncontested markets and get out of the way of competitors rather than fight with them for a share of an existing market.
