The Early Years

Technical analysts often have three characteristics in common: They are interested in numbers that change, they think visually, and they prefer cats to dogs.

I first got interested in the stock market when I was 11 years old and in grade school in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Numbers fascinated me, and I used to stop by the Kidder Peabody office in Newport to watch the ticker tape on my way home from the orthodontist. Later, when I went to Penn State, I used to hang out at the only brokerage office in State College—Green, Ellis and Anderson—to watch the ticker tape there.

The stock market crash of May 1962 really fueled my interest. The panic surrounding it was both dramatic and fascinating.
