You might have heard some fancy names like deliberate self-harm, self-harm, self-mutilation, self-inflicted violence, self-cutting, parasuicide and self-abuse. But I’m calling cutting, burning, taking overdoses, hitting yourself, banging your head against walls and not letting wounds heal hurting yourself. Lots of people get these actions mixed up with suicide attempts, but the way I see it, hurting yourself is a way of coping with overpowering feelings that you can’t express any other way.
