In 1942, the Red Army suffered several disastrous defeats at the hands of the Germans and lost close to five million soldiers. Around that time Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin summoned one of the country’s leading military airplane designers and his personal senior weapons adviser, General Alexander Yakovlev, to his office in the Kremlin (see Illustration 3.1).
