On April 13, 1471, during the War of the Roses, Yorkist troops under the command of King Edward IV (see Illustration 7.1), and Lancastrian forces led by Richard Neville, the 16th Earl of Warwick, and John de Vere, the 13th Earl of Oxford, met near the town of Barnet some 12 miles north of London. Both commanders arranged their armies east to west on either side of the Great North Road running through Barnet. At four o’clock in the morning on April 14, the soldiers of both armies were awakened and started preparing for the decisive battle.
