The top five ways to ensure good-quality ongoing care

  • Don’t jump the gun. Ensure that the decision you make about the best type of care for the person you’re looking after is driven by him and his level of need. If someone is still largely independent, a nursing home in which everyone else is bed-bound will drive him to distraction.
  • Arrange for an expert assessment. If the person wants to stay in his own home for as long as possible, ask the local authority to carry out an assessment. If remaining at home is deemed safe and workable, the social worker and occupational therapist can advise you about adaptations, such as hand rails and raised toilet seats, and how much visiting care will be needed.
  • Visit selected care homes. You wouldn’t dream of buying a house without seeing it first and being able to ask the estate agent questions. The same is true when you’re choosing a care home for someone you love. Visit the place to get a feel for it, and make sure you get the opportunity to talk to staff members and other residents and their families.
  • Check out funding. Living in a care home doesn’t come cheap. Prices vary depending on whether your loved one needs nursing or residential care and also in relation to geographic location. The value of the person’s property and savings is used to calculate how much he needs to contribute, but it’s not a certainty that he’ll have to sell his house.
