The Access Network — The Access network deals with how the subscriber traffic (Layer 3 and above) is carried over to the NAP’s network. Different methods exist for encapsulation for carrying this traffic: RFC 1483 bridging, RFC 1483 routing, PPP over ATM (PPPoA), PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE), and variation of RFC 1483 bridging encapsulation, such as Routed Bridge Encapsulation. Each of these encapsulation methods is discussed in detail along with implementation considerations.
