The well of typographic knowledge is vast
and the skills needed to master its complex-
ities are many. There are hundreds, if not
thousands, of interrelated pieces of information
a designer must hold in his or her head while
navigating the bigger issues of concept and
layout: tiny differences between the shapes of
letters, the systematic, rhythmic relationships
between letter strokes and the counterspaces
between them; the spacing between letters,
words, sentences, and paragraphs; conventions
for aligning blocks of type and separating others,
