
Early sketches focused on
square-form sans-serif letters
that reflect the area’s industrial
heritage, as well as the museum
architecture. The first proposal
conceived of a full alphabet of
letters; each letter was to bear
the name of an artifact from
the museum’s collection, set
into the surface in Welsh and
English, along with its museum
catalogue number. The indi-
vidual letterforms containing
this text element are shown
flat and in a computer-gener-
ated rendering of the letters
on site. The heavy outline indi-
cates a concrete rim housing a
terrazzo surface that holds
steel text in place. The red ini-
tial creates contrast and
echoes details in the museum
