project brief
The world is in precarious shape and what we
manage to do to each other, even worse. “Human
Rights, Human Wrongs” is an extremely broad-
based theme that allows students to choose and
interpret a social issue.
Students will voice their opinions on their
chosen issue by creating a visual, conceptual
statement for a general audience, using the in-
tegration and/or juxtaposition of type and im-
age, possibly in a new or unexpected way. The
poster should aim to heighten public awareness
of their topic and make viewers question their
own beliefs and lifestyles.
How does the effective poster achieve its
aim? Remember, by its very nature, the poster
has can seize the immediate attention of the
viewer, and then retain it for what is usually a
brief but intense period. During that span of
attention, it can provoke and motivate its audi-
ence. It can make the viewer gasp, laugh, refl ect,
question, assent, protest, recoil, or otherwise
react. This is part of the process by which the
message is conveyed and, in successful cases,
ultimately acted upon. At its most effective, the
poster is a dynamic force for change.
The image(s) can be “borrowed” from
books or magazines (e.g., photographs and press
cuttings), photocopied, rescaled, recombined to
create the desired effect, or better still, you can
photograph your own imagery. Make sure you
credit the photographer. Illustrations have to be
your own.
project goal
To explore and express, via images and typog-
raphy, questions related to the profound effect
we have on each other and the environment and
to confront the issues that constantly jeopar-
dize the respect for others, thereby encouraging
universal values. Remember, fraternity and soli-
darity are embodied by helping each other and
by reciprocity.

Everything Is Bigger in Texas
Student: John Magnifi co
This poster was designed in response to one
of the many critical issues surrounding our na-
tion’s system of mass incarceration. The state-
born slogan “Everything Is Bigger in Texas”
represents the misuse of capital punishment.
One thing I did not want to do when designing a
poster on this controversial issue was to overtly
say which side is right and which side is wrong,
or pound statistics down viewers’ throats. I think
it is more effective to send subtle messages that
spark people’s interest or awareness and let
them form their own opinions.

Let Them Eat Pork
Student: Erin Murphy
This poster was created in re-
sponse to the French National
Assembly’s decision to ban
Muslim head scarves and other
religious symbols from public
schools in February of 2004.
My response focuses on the
ignorance of this archaic deci-
sion regarding the traditional
practices of Islam, with eigh-
teenth-century Marie Antoi-
nette representing the modern-
day French government.

What Will You Remember
When You Are 18?
Student: Huanwu Zhai
Faculty overview: Speaking to
the young about voting can go
either way, as apathy pervades
a generation with everything.
You suddenly fi nd that one
thing that seems to matter
most in their lives (for now)
and turn it around so that they
observe and take notice. When
this poster was displayed on
campus, it seemed that ev-
eryone stopped to notice it
as they all could relate to it in
their own way—the sign of a
good communication.

Global Warming?
Student: Daniel de Graaf
This poster calls attention to
the notion that solutions are
often before our very own eyes.
Global warming, although a
serious and complicated issue,
simply demands a pragmatic
investigation and consequent
alteration of our habits in or-
der to be reasoned.
