7. Establish symbols, colors, and visual identities
Giving users the opportunity to use symbols to create an identity and sense of belonging in a community doesn't necessarily mean that you have to use visual symbols. Community members can find some tremendously innovative ways to let other users know how to respond to them. For example, members of the ONELead community have learned to use numbers instead of icons to represent themselves to other members.
