Up till now, decision support has been a passive activity. The data warehouses that have been developed so far are of the passive variety. This means that they tend to just sit and wait for someone or some application to ask them a question, and they react and provide an answer. The idea of an active decision support system (DSS) is one that knows what it is that we are interested in.
