In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing business world, companies have embraced the concept of training to help their employees meet the growing demands placed on them. During the last five years, training budgets have increased by almost 50 percent. While I would be among the first to insist that training is critical and necessary, too often it can fail when the training process is not fully thought out.

One of the great myths of the business world is that you just conduct a quick training program and the problem is solved. Sometimes I’m reminded of the line from an old Mickey Rooney movie, “Let’s get a barn and put on a show.” An elaborate production is staged with modest effort and limited attention given to the real needs of the audience. ...
