Reference Material

In addition to the written brief, it can be efficient to use reference images to narrow down the conceptual search.

Much of the time, the art director or the game designers will provide you with reference images. But as a concept artist, I like to volunteer to do this for them. If you’re the one who chose the inspirational images, if they come from your own taste and judgment, it’s much easier to generate ideas.

It’s common to see two types of reference collection:
