NARRATING LITERACY, IDENTITY, AND CULTURE

In this chapter we take you into our teacher education classroom to experience some of the narratives students told about their early literacy experiences. Sharing literacy narratives has become a fairly routine practice in teacher education classrooms, a practice that provides opportunities for developing critical literacies (Florio-Ruane, 2001; Johnson, 2006; McKinney & Giorgis, 2009; Parker, 2010; Rodriguez & Cho, 2011). We show how we used narrative analysis to understand their experiences, which, in turn, helped us to support them to go more deeply in their own analysis and reflections.
