At the end of the year, a number of teachers in our class experimented with the book Jazz Baby (Weatherford, 2002) in their teaching with second graders in the tutoring practicum at Liddell Elementary. Jazz Baby is a book from a series called BeBop Books , published by Lee & Low as a multicultural leveled text collection. Leveled text collections are produced for teachers who match books to readers by selecting texts along a gradient of difficulty that challenges students to learn new strategies without overwhelming them with text features they do not yet control (Fountas, Pinnell, & Bird, 1999).
