Why this book? When this project first started, it seemed to be a relatively simple idea to build a supply chain to support commercialization of a product that had been built and tested by research and development personnel. As a Fortune 500 company engaged in world-wide operations, a supply department effectively meeting the company’s needs, and the prevailing wisdom that suppliers would be “knocking at our door” to be part of the billion-dollar plus project we were planning, setting up the supply chain for the new product would appear to be a cake-walk. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
