RATING SCALE TEMPLATE

Instructions: The following template can be used to build a rating scale to assess actual (or simulated) performance.

1. List the criteria to be observed in the left column. Add or subtract criterion rows as needed.

2. For each criterion, carefully and concisely describe the observable behavior or results for novice, developing, skillful, and expert performance. Add or subtract levels as needed, but it is often best to start with three or four levels.

3. Obtain feedback on the wording of the descriptions in order to improve them and make them clearer.
