7.1. Working with core files

A core file is generated when various errors occur in an application and the process aborts. The reasons can be errors such as memory-address violations, illegal instructions, bus errors, and user-generated quit signals. The core file contains a memory image of the aborted process. Even if the application does not stop, it might be useful to have a core file as an image of the memory state of the process in a specific time.
