Field Creation

As in object creation, the easiest way to understand field creation is to try it. Return to your custom object detail page and click the New button in the Custom Fields & Relationships section. The first page of the New Custom Field Wizard prompts for field type. The data types can be thought of in terms of seven categories:

1. Text, Text Area, Text Area (Long), Text Area (Rich), Text (Encrypted)—Text fields are varying lengths of Unicode text. Force.com does not allow fields with other encodings. Text stores 1 to 255 characters, Text Area stores the same number of characters but allows line breaks, and Text Area (Long) and Text Area (Rich) store up to 32,000 characters.
