When I wrote the first edition of this book, in 1998, almost all diabetes in children was type 1 diabetes. Since then, a vast change in this situation has taken place. The incidence of type 2 diabetes is rapidly approaching the incidence of type 1 diabetes in children, and the culprits to blame for this huge increase are obesity and lack of exercise. I have a lot more to say about this problem in the section on type 2 diabetes in children later in this chapter.

There are still plenty of new cases of type 1 diabetes in children. This chapter contains basic information about the care for those children; for a full discussion of type 1 diabetes, see my book Type 1 Diabetes For Dummies (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.).
