xploration Rig: A structure used to carry the equipment needed for explor-
atory drilling. See Semisubmersible rig.
Exploration Well: (1) Drilling carried out to determine whether hydrocar-
bons are present in a particular area or structure. Also known as a “wildcat
well.” (2) A wildcat or well drilled in a new area with unknown producing
potential. (3) A well into an area where petroleum has not been previously
found or one targeted for formations above or below known reservoirs. (4) A
well that is not a development well, a service well, or a stratigraphic test well.
