These terms of art are the definitions of the main terms that we have used writing this book. The definitions may not be the same as the ones you might provide, however, this is the point. As anthropologist Gregory Bateson pointed out in 1972, it is the difference that makes the difference. We welcome your additions and your constructive points of view.
Activate
To make something active. To stimulate something new.
Automation
The use of technology and control systems to replace work that was historically done by humans.
Brainstorming
A series of exercises for generating ideas in which intuitive tools are often used.
Collaboration
Working together to achieve more than can be achieved on one's own.
Complex systems
Any system with a very large set of intersecting components whose outcomes are achieved non-linearly.
Consultant
A person who gives professional advice.
Culture
The ideas, customs, and behaviours of a particular group.
Decision making
The activity of resolving a question. Sometimes the experience of going around and around in circles until the most senior person makes their mind up and tells everyone what the answer is.
Design
A plan or drawing of something to be created. A matter of personal taste.
Design thinking
The method by which designers solve problems.
