7.1 THE A PRIORI KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED IN RESTORATION
From a mathematical standpoint, given the model described by (2) and the
degraded picture g(x, y), the aim of picture restoration is to make as good an
estimate as possible of the original picture or scene /(*, y). Evidently, any
such estimation procedure must require some form of knowledge concerning
the degradation function h (x, y) in (2). In some cases, the physical phenomenon
underlying the degradation can be used to determine h(x, y). Examples of
this approach are given in Section
