This book is about storytelling—a new form of storytelling, to be sure, but part of a tradition that stretches back to preliterate times. Storytelling is a magical and powerful craft. Not only can it transport the audience on a thrilling journey into an imaginary world, but it can also reveal dark secrets of human nature or inspire the audience with the desire to do noble deeds. Storytelling can also be pressed into service for more utilitarian goals: to teach, to promote, and to train.

The type of storytelling we will investigate in this book, digital storytelling, can do all the things that traditional storytelling can do, and a number of people would argue that it can even do many of these things better. The first ...
