In the abbreviation for the predicted computer
catastrophe that was to occur just after midnight of
1/1/2000, Y2K, Y stood for year. In many responses
to computer-asked questions, Y stands for yes.
In video, Y has traditionally stood for the signal carrying
non-color-related level and detail information, as in
YIQ, YUV, YC, Y/B-Y/R-Y,
etc. But does it really? And,
even if it does, should it be called Y, or something else?
