CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL

Many schools, colleges, and universities now have film courses. No serious study of film is ever wasted, but be careful and critical before committing yourself to any extended course of study.

Mainly film studies: Many film departments are underequipped, underbudgeted, and are committed to film studies, not field production. They are a necessary part of a liberal education and sharpen student perceptions, but these institutions teach social history, analysis, and criticism, not creation. The measure of a film school is what the students and faculty produce. Quite simply, you must study with active filmmakers.
