Self-control

A reasonable definition of self-control is the discipline we practice over our emotions, impulses and desires.

On this basis, we should be able to prevent ourselves from acting, reacting to something, or from feeling something that we do or do not want to feel.

Concerning emotional intelligence, self-control is not just about choosing which foods to eat, denying ourselves certain luxuries, or limiting our excesses in anything that may, potentially, be bad for us!

It has far more to do with restraining those attitudes and behaviours that might otherwise inhibit positive outcomes. Anger, stress, anxiety, frustration and even arrogance can often bring a consequential negative impact on what might have been a positive result.
