Entities move between the static pictures representing events, locations of
care, states, and so on. These movements occur along pathways that guide
the entities from one location to another (since they are unaware of their
environment and, thus, incapable of directing themselves—see the discus-
sion of agents in Section 9.4). These pathways are typically concealed during
the simulation so the animation appears cleanly, without many crisscrossing
path lines.
