The maritime city of Cienfuegos has a well-preserved historic centre and one of the most captivating bays in the Caribbean Sea – hence its nickname, the “Pearl of the South”. Originally occupied by Jagua Indians, the gulf was “discovered” by Columbus in 1494 and the town of Fernandina de Jagua, which became Cienfuegos, was founded here in 1819.
