The diverse geology and capricious climate of this remote mountain range, which could be on the Mediterranean rather than the Atlantic Ocean, encourage a fascinating range of flora and fauna. In 1989, 320 sq km (120 sq miles) of the Serra were designated a Nature Park, as classified by the EUROPARC Federation.
