Small Mammals

South Africa’s smaller mammals range from rodents and bats, which you are likely to spot on a daily basis, to the more elusive aardvark and pangolin, both of which feature high on the wish list of seasoned safari-goers.

TAXONOMY

Many of these smaller animals are evolutionary one-offs. For instance, the aardvark is the only living member of the order Tubulidentata. By contrast, pigs belong to the same order as giraffes, camels and antelopes.
