Souvenirs

1. Samovar

The samovar is traditionally used to boil water for tea. Made of brass or copper, and warmed by coals contained in the central tube, the vessel was designed in the 18th century. The word is a combination of “samo”, meaning “itself”, and “varit”, meaning “to boil”. A permit is required to export a samovar made before 1945.

2. Matryoshka Dolls

Consisting of a series of carved dolls, each one smaller than the next, matryoshka dolls are on sale all over the city and come in a variety of styles. The traditional ones are the prettiest, but those painted as Russian, Soviet and world leaders are also very popular.
