This is the only Goan church not covered in lime plaster. The Baroque structure blends Doric, Corinthian, Ionic and composite styles in its three-tiered façade. At the top on a quadrangular pediment is an intricately carved basalt stone tablet, which features the Jesuit motto, IHS or Iaeus Hominum Salvator, meaning “Jesus the Saviour” in Greek.
Inside the basilica is a chapel where the relics of St Francis Xavier are kept. The interior of this chapel has paintings, depicting scenes from the life of the saint.
