This small, fine collection of French 18th-century works of art and furniture was formed by Ernest Cognacq and his wife, Louise Jay, founder of the Art Deco La Samaritaine, on the Quai du Louvre, which was once Paris’s largest depart-ment store. The collection was bequeathed to the city and is now housed here in the Hôtel Donon – an elegant building dating from 1575 with an 18th-century façade and wood-panelled rooms.
