This former royal palace, closed to the public, has had a turbulent history. Starting out in the early 17th century as Richelieu’s Palais Cardinal, it passed to the Crown on his death and was the childhood home of Louis XIV. Under the control of the 18th-century royal dukes of Orléans, it was the scene of brilliant gatherings, as well as periods of debauchery and gambling.
