Not much is known about the life of Raphael’s model and lover, La Fornarina, yet over the centuries she has acquired a name, Margherita Luti, and even a biography. Her father was a Sienese baker (la fornarina means “the baker’s girl”) and his shop was here in Trastevere near Raphael’s frescoes in the Villa Farnesina.

Margherita earned a reputation as a “fallen woman” and Raphael, wishing to be absolved before dying, turned her away from his deathbed. After his death she took refuge in the convent of Santa Apollonia in Trastevere.
