Baird’s Tapir

The largest neotropical land mammal, Baird’s tapir resembles the offspring of a horse and a pig. It has good hearing and a long, prehensile snout, and its keen sense of smell makes up for its poor vision. The tapir’s thick hide and huge bulk help protect it against jaguars and crocodiles. Sadly, this shy, reclusive creature fares less well against illegal hunters. The Cordillera Talamanca is a rare sanctuary with a stable population, but elsewhere numbers are dropping: it is estimated that fewer than 3,000 individuals remain in the wild.
