San José’s pre-eminent church, the Metropolitan Cathedral was built in 1871 to replace the original cathedral, which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1820. Designed by Eusebio Rodríguez, the austere-looking structure combines Greek Orthodox, Neo-Classical, and Baroque styles. Its linear façade is supported by an arcade of Doric columns and topped by a Neo-Classical pediment with steeples on each side.
